Turmeric is the richly coloured ground root of a tropical South Asian plant of the Ginger family.
Turmeric powder has a warm, bitter, pepper-like flavor and earthy, mustard-like aroma.
Suggested Uses
- Often combined with spicy, exotic spices in traditional Indian or Asian vegetable dishes.
- Add early on during the cooking process.
Extracts of turmeric are used commercially as a food colourant, and domestically used to add colour to food.
Be careful of spills as it has a tendency to stain.
The Variety
Turmeric is the dried and ground rhizome of Curcuma longa, in the ginger family (Zingiberaceae).
It is native to Southeast Asia.

HEALTH BENEFITS
Turmeric has been used for centuries as a spice, as well as a colourant and for its medicinal properties. The active chemical compound Curcumin is an antioxidant, digestive, anti-inflammatory, antiplatelet (decreases clotting), cholesterol lowering and anti-carcinogenic. For a common cold, turmeric can help stop the infection from worsening. There are also studies on turmeric's effect on cancer cells. Piperine, a compound in Black Pepper aids the absorption of curcumin, and fats also increase the bioavailability. One of the tastiest ways to take turmeric is in a curry, but for daily therapeutic method you can try: 1 teaspoon coconut oil mixed with 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric and a few turns of fresh ground black pepper; You can take this method in the morning then the afternoon so the smaller quantities have better absorption through the day. Otherwise 1 teaspoon in your yoghurt also works.
